Metallic structure

The building has a structure made of metallic trusses. This structure is prefabricated, transported and assembled on site.

This huge metallic structure is parallel in two of the building façades. This solution permits, without any structural adaptation, to have a big cantilevered volume that promotes the building permeability towards the interior of the block.

The building structure provides it with lightness and reduces its material consumption compared to a building with conventional support solutions.  In this sense, we are elaborating a study about the structure’s weight and the quantity of the used material that will help us learn from the employed resources and achieve environmental improvements.

Alveolar Slabs

The use of concrete alveolar active slabs is another innovation point concerning the building structure. Some 13 meter long pre-stressed concrete alveolar slabs cover the entire space, from truss to truss. This fact gives the maximum flexibility for the interior distribution. Through their alveoli the air extraction and renovation is carried out. Above the alveolar slabs we concrete a compression layer. There are no false ceilings and flooring covering the structure: there is only a concrete compression layer above the slabs that provides the ensemble with all the inertia of the material. The warmth or freshness of the inside of the building is stored in the slabs and is radiated towards the interior during the night. This way we temper and keep the temperature, reducing the building’s energy demand and creating a comfortable interior atmosphere.


The envelope of the whole building plays two roles: formal and functional.

The vertical and the horizontal envelope are simultaneously façade, roof, bioclimatic space and air gap for the passage of installations and services needed for the correct functioning of the building resources. The vertical envelope is composed of a succession of layers with different functions:


– The first layer contains the insulation, the carpentry and the interior finishes. The materials composing the insulation and the carpentry are industrialized and assembled on site. A sandwich panel integrates the waterproofing membrane and the necessary insulation. The carpentry is a continuous opening placed at the sight level of a seated person.

– The second layer of the envelope is an air gap which provides the façade with ventilation and evacuates the accumulated heat. This layer contains the passage of the building installations: climate, air renovation, gases, water impulsion and evacuation… This fact permits an easy access to installations and connection flexibility.  All the conduits are placed vertically and suspended from the façade, which creates easy and direct connections and reduce the installations path.

In addition, the building has been connected to the neighbourhood’s districlima network. This means the reduction of HVAC equipment. 90% of the energy distributed by this source comes from renewable sources.

– The third layer is formed by the vent-screen strips, which have two different positions and are made up of two different materials that have the propriety of giving continuation to the building and integrating it to its context, answering to its orientation and functional requirements.

The disposition of the longitudinal strips is developed taking into account the illumination and solar protection needs of the laboratories and the offices.

The vent-screen material is composed of sand and gravel, sand, iron oxide and high resistance cement. This mixture is pressed and placed vertically, without reinforced elements. Its mineral and porous texture permits a perfect integration of the relief and colours in the context of the building.

The material has photocatalytic proprieties, which help reduce, under the solar effects, the pollution and the decomposition of polluting city oxides (NOx).

In the same façade layer we find as well a light material which is easily placed. It is composed of cement, mineral pigment and additives and has the function of protecting and diffracting the sun light. Its dimensions and placement of the pieces provide with the necessary solar protection according to the inclination of the solar beams and the different seasons of the year.

A slight inclination combined with light colours permits the diffraction of light towards the interior of the building and increases the brightness, avoiding visual and overheating discomfort.


The roof has been built with a green water tank roof system and is used as a space for community life that simultaneously stores rainwater and regenerates the air of the surroundings through its vegetation.

All the installations are accessible and ventilated. Nevertheless, they are hidden and protected by a perimeter railing. Some photovoltaic panels are placed horizontally all along the roof’s perimeter.


The headquarters of Leitat arises from the logic of reversibility. It is a dry construction with prefabricated / industrial elements and reversible bonds that is emerging as a new way for the industrialized construction to effectively assemble and then disassemble the entire building, transport components and recycling, reuse or completely reconstruct the building at another site.



The technology centre is being evaluated with the tool “verde”, which obliges us to study the repercussion on the global environmental impact according to its construction processes and its reality of the planned building use. According to “verde”, the main guidelines to follow in order to achieve a good environmental behaviour are: energy, resources, indoor air quality and innovation. Through the construction project we have collected all the information about the employed materials, from their environmental characteristics to their fabrication and origin.

The ensemble of the building has an energetic remote management system that evaluates consumption and comfort in the different zones. This system permits to regulate the cost and the consumption hours.
