      From the beginning, innovation has been an integral and fruitful tool for all projects of Picharchitects. Through the observation of the reality of construction, we discovered the need to rethink the current processes and systems, which until then have been inefficient, unsustainable or not rigorous at all.
With the aim of achieving greater quality, efficiency and less environment impact in architectural projects, we are carrying out a research focused on materials, building systems and energy systems through 4 fields of action that we will mention below.

Collaborating with the EU’s investigation and innovation programme: Horizon 2020

We are continuously involved in the development of building systems and energy efficiency projects, together with other technological centres, universities, material manufacturers, consultants and engineers around Europe. This way, we contribute to the achievement of European objectives related to the continuous improvement of the construction industry.

Our main role is the architectural integration and practical application of the systems developed, together with the provision of feedback based on the practical experience of the construction.

Industry and industrialization

Creation of construction elements together with industrial partners.

We consider that a close relationship between architect and industrialists of materials or systems is fundamental for an efficient performance of the project. It allows to establish a two-way communication, through the enhancement of the construction element, which brings industrial potential and inspires constant innovation.

“Our society’s parameters are industrial (a video, a car, a computer, etc.), while construction is still based on manual processes. This implies an implicit mismatch between what is expected form our process and what we can really get from it. All this with the aggravating circumstance that the old guilds that guaranteed the quality of manual trades no longer exist and the workforce involved is becoming less and less qualified and unstructured.”

University/company interaction: CEIM

In 2009, the firm founded a Chair in Industrialized Building and Environment (CEIM: Cátedra de Edificación Industrializada y Medio Ambiente), within the framework of the International University of Catalonia.

The Chair was created as a platform to link the different participants in construction and to transfer knowledge to academia, from the practical side. All this through the interaction between researchers, students and manufacturers, designers, architects and engineers.

Picharchitects, together with the company Rockwool, sponsor the CEIM Chair and its members participate in the training and research activities organized by it.

Applied innovation

Building site innovation, research and work with international and multidisciplinary partners are present in all our architectural projects.

The study, internally, has established some transversal procedures that allow the analysis of the constructive and environmental aspects proposed during the project. All this is done with the aim of applying the experience and knowledge acquired to the present day.

Application, innovation and research are interrelated in all our projects.

Among the tools we use, we highlight the following ones: passive strategies for integration with the environment, analysis of the life cycle of materials and buildings, circular economy, BIM models (Building Information Modeling) linked to environmental information, industrialized processes and the exchange of knowledge and experience with other actors in the construction process.
